East Meets West Theatre

East Meets West Theatre is a community interest company that aims to benefit:

East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) artists, particularly those who are emerging, underrepresented, or from migrant backgrounds. We aim to support this community by creating inclusive opportunities for artistic development, professional visibility, and cultural expression. Many ESEA artists face systemic barriers to access and representation within the UK’s creative industries, and our work will focus on nurturing their voices, showcasing their stories, and building platforms where their talent can thrive.

What is the Story?

 - A Tale of Love, Power and Tragedy.

In a world where fate is written in ink and blood, two sisters navigate love, survival, and scheme within a powerful yet decaying household. One seeks security through seduction and obedience, the other freedom through defiance—but both are caught in a web of feudalism, deception, and doomed passion.

As power shifts and choices unravel, their fates become a chilling reflection of a society where even the victors are prisoners of their own making.

A story of dreams turned to dust, love turned to ruin, and survival at an unbearable cost.

Why is it a 2025 Must-See new Musical?

What's the Inspiration?

 - A Story From Red Mansion's Dream (红楼梦)

Often hailed as China’s greatest literary masterpiece, Hónglóu Mèng is a sweeping epic of love, power, and downfall within an aristocratic family in the 18th century. Originally written by Cao Xueqin, it is a story of forbidden romance, social ambition, and the inescapable grip of fate, all set against the backdrop of a crumbling dynasty.

Think of it as China’s Gone with the Wind meets Pride and Prejudice, with the grandeur of The Great Gatsby—but deeper, darker, and more heartbreakingly real. It’s not just a novel; it’s a cultural phenomenon. It has shaped Chinese literature, philosophy, and drama for centuries.

1. Performing Arts

The company produces and present original theatre performances led by East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) artists. These productions will explore stories rooted in ESEA identities, migrant experiences, and contemporary social issues, blending traditional and modern influences. Activities will include full-scale performances, rehearsed readings, scratchnights, and artist led theatre labs. The company will also collaborate with venues, festivals, and local communities to bring these productions to a wider audience, with a commitment to affordable ticketing and accessible formats.

The community will benefit by having access to live performances that reflect their cultural experiences and challenge dominant narratives. This visibility can foster pride, promote cross-cultural understanding, and inspire the next generation of ESEA creatives. Unlike commercial theatre companies that often cater to mainstream audiences and profit goals, our productions are created with the primary purpose of empowering underrepresented voices and making theatre an inclusive, community-rooted experience.

2. Support Activities to Performing Arts

The company offers tailored support services for performing arts projects, including directing, producing, stage and technical management, dramaturgy, and production mentoring. These services will be delivered
through artist development programmes, collaborations with grassroots creatives, and support for community-led performance initiatives. Special attention will be given to emerging ESEA artists, who will receive hands-on opportunities to gain experience and develop their professional practice in a nurturing environment.

The community will benefit by developing practical and transferable skills within the arts sector, helping to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity. Participants will build confidence, create networks, and gain real-world experience in a sector where ESEA representation is limited. Unlike commercial service providers who charge high fees and operate on a profit basis, our CIC offers these services to uplift and grow the ESEA creative community, often at low or no cost and always with mentorship and inclusion at the core.

3. Artistic Creation

The company supports the creation of original work by ESEA artists through residencies, writing labs, interdisciplinary collaborations, and commissions. Artists will be provided with time, space, and resources to explore personal and collective narratives, blending cultural heritage with new artistic expressions. These works may take the form of scripts, performance art, visual storytelling, or digital media, and will be showcased through public sharings, exhibitions, or performances.

The community will benefit by having opportunities to see their stories and identities creatively explored and celebrated. This fosters a stronger sense of cultural pride and ownership, especially for underrepresented voices who may not otherwise have access to traditional routes of artistic development. Unlike commercial creative studios, which prioritise marketable output, our focus is on nurturing artistic expression as a tool for empowerment, healing, and social change.

4. Cultural Education

The company delivers Trinity's Arts Award and other arts-based educational programmes to schools, youth groups, and community organisations. These will include drama workshops, cultural storytelling sessions, performance skills training, and creative writing projects tailored to ESEA heritage and values. Facilitated by trained artists and educators, the sessions will also promote intercultural learning and dialogue in diverse educational settings, with a focus on accessible and inclusive engagement.

The community will benefit by gaining access to high-quality, culturally relevant education that builds creativity, confidence, and identity awareness, especially for young people of ESEA background. These learning experiences help close the opportunity gap and foster social cohesion through shared expression and understanding. Unlike commercial education providers, our programmes are driven by community need, not profit, and are designed to be inclusive, reflective of lived experience, and deeply connected to the communities they serve.
